As modular construction methods are adopted on more and more project sites, the case studies are getting better and better. In fact, there have been some truly remarkable projects recently both in design and occupied. We’ve compiled some of the most amazing modular building projects in the world right here. Check them out:
1. Winner of the adApt NYC Micro-Unit Housing Design Competition
Announced back in January, NYC Mayor Bloomberg announced “My Micro NY” the winner of the adAPT NYC competition. The adAPT competition was created in an effort to search for a micro-unit apartment building that could be developed into a new housing model for the “small household population”.
Micro units range from 250 to 370 square feet consisting of an open space to be used as both the living room and the bedroom.
The development team is made up of nARCHITECTS, a New York City-based architecture firm, Monadnock Development LLC, and the non-profit Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation. The modular units will be manufactured by Capsys at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and assembled on site.
2. Centre Village is a Modular Affordable Micro Housing Complex in Winnipeg
Winnipeg’s Centre Village housing cooperative utilizes design to help revitalize a neglected inner-city neighborhood and to provide its residents, underprivileged families, with a unique setting that inspires pride and community. The site was previously an abandoned lot zoned for six single-family houses.
The project established a micro village of 25 dwellings within six, three-story blocks. The design features stacked modules configured to cantilever in areas creating an engaging and attractive facade.
3. Starbucks Opens Drive-Thru Made from Recycled Shipping Containers in Northglenn, CO
Starbucks embarked upon a pilot program aimed at developing eco-friendly shops worldwide. The Northglenn location was built using two shipping containers. The containers are clad in reclaimed snow fencing local to the development site. The initiative by Starbucks strives to use recycled local materials giving each shop it’s own unique design style.
4. 15-building Atlantic Yards project to be prefabricated construction technology worth nearly $5 billion
The Atlantic Yards project has been a long time in the making but it finally broke ground late in 2012. The first building named B2 consists of 363 residential units 50% of which are set aside for low to middle-income families.
B2 is expected to be the tallest modular building in the world at 32 stories. It is thought that when successfully completed this project will advance the adoption of modular construction worldwide.
5. China Will Build the Tallest Building In the World in Just 90 Days
Although this project is prefab versus whole unit volumetric modular construction, a top project list can’t leave this project out. Sky City, consists of 2,749 feet (838 meters) distributed in 220
floors and it will go up in just 90 days in Changsha city, by the Xiangjiang River. It seems unbelievable, but the same construction Chinese company Broad Group built the skyscraper featured in this time-lapse video that went viral in 2012.
